Hawaii has featured in dozens of films and television shows. Not all have been popular but one can easily think of at least half a dozen that went on to become blockbusters and multiple award winners. When you plan a holiday in Hawaii, perhaps centered around Maui or Oahu, you would want to explore some of the locales where memorable movies were filmed.
- The Descendants is one of the two films shot in Hawaii this decade, the other being Aloha. While Aloha was a forgettable film, The Descendants bagged several nominations at The Oscars and won in the adapted screenplay category. Unlike some of the other films that use the more spectacular aspects of Hawaii, The Descendants focused on the cultures and milieus.
- The most famous film to have been shot in Hawaii is Jurassic Park. The 1993 film was partly shot in Hawaii and then the makers of Jurassic World also chose to shoot a section of the film here. The other famous film that is loved around the world is Pearl Harbor. Jurassic Park may not have highlighted much of Hawaii as the star of the show is the T-Rex but Pearl Harbor did showcase Oahu as a paradise. Hawaii did bear the brunt of a brutal war and it was fitting that the film based on the bombings was shot here.
- 50 First Dates is an unforgettable movie, even for those who do not like romantic comedies. It was one of the first romantic comedies that dealt with a serious subject and had plenty of tearjerkers. It was not an epic movie or a film shot on a massive budget so you get to see the more realistic portrayal of Hawaii. Some of the other films shot in Hawaii over the years, dating all the way back to 1953, are From Here to Eternity, South Pacific, Blue Hawaii, Hard Ticket to Hawaii, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Six Days Seven Nights, Point Break, Soul Surfer, Punch-Drunk Love, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Tropic Thunder, Blue Crush and Big Eyes.
Not all of these films are set in Hawaii, as in the story. There are plenty of television shows that have been filmed on the islands including Lost, Hawaii Five-O and Magnum P.I. If you wish to explore some of the locations these films were shot at and some other unexplored places then you should embark on one of the famous Maui helicopter tours in Hawaii.
